This picture depicts a Chinese myth about the constellation we know as the Big Dipper. An intelligent but terribly ugly man threw himself into the lake in desperation, intending to drown himself. A giant magical tortoise lifted him up and placed him in the sky, to save him and to celebrate his bright spirit, for all to see.
